Het Distinguished Service Cross werd in 1901 ingesteld als het Conspciuous Service Cross. Het verkreeg haar huidige naam in oktober 1914. Zij werd toegekend aan officieren van de marine voor verdienstelijke daden in oorlogstijd. In 1916 werd een gesp, een zogenaamde 'bar' aan de onderscheiding toegevoegd, ten teken dat zijn voor een tweede of verdere maal was toegekend. In 1931 werd de onderscheiding ook opengesteld voor koopvaardij-officieren en vanaf 1940 konden luchtmacht- en legerofficieren, welken aan boord van een schip dienden, ook in aanmerking komen.
In totaal verkregen 42 Nederlanders het kruis. Twee van hen ontvingen tevens een zogenaamde 'Bar' voor een tweede toekenning.
