Gilbride, William Preston

Born in St. Alban's, Vermont (USA) on 28 April, 1911.
Known awards: CBE,DSO,ON.3x

Commandeur in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau met de zwaarden
Commander in the Order of Orange-Nassau with swords
Royal Decree no. 2 of 8 December, 1945 ; Canada Gazette of 22 December, 1945
Brigadier, Deputy Adjutant & Quartermaster-General, 1st Canadian Corps
  The recommendation reads as follows:

Just prior to the capitulation of the 25th German Army in Northwest Holland, 1st Canadian Corps assumed the difficult and pressing task of supplying food to the Dutch civilians, many of whom were suffering from advanced stages of starvation. Brigadier William Preston Gilbride, Deputy Adjutant and Quartermaster General, 1st Canadian Corps, was instrumental in organizing the highly efficient machinery for the speedy distribution of food and other necessities. Untiringly, this officer devoted his energy and time to solving the many problems which threatened the smooth distribution of supplies to the Dutch populace.
By numerous discussions with Dutch officials, both military and civilian, Brigadier Gilbride was able to get a very clear perspective of what was required to relieve the suffering of the civilians, and he was thus able to employ, with the least possible delay, the resource under the command of the Corps, so that they produced the required results in the least possible time.
Brigadier Gilbride was also responsible for ensuring that tools, stores, clothing and equipment of Dutch origin which had been requisitioned by the Germans were returned to the Dutch. He firmly insisted that all German troops be subjected to a strict search to locate and remote any loot, prior to their departure from Holland.
Always cheerful, cooperative and courteous in his dealings with Dutch officials, and by his ceaseless endeavours to find new ways in which he could further the rehabilitation of Holland, Brigadier Gilbride was largely responsible for the success of 1st Canadian Corps in aiding the Netherlands, after five years of Nazi oppression, to rise again towards a great and free nationhood.

Gouldie, Stanley Walter

Known awards: BK

Bronzen Kruis
Bronze Cross
Royal Decree no. 2 of 8 December, 1945 ; Canada Gazette of 22 December, 1945
Corporal (Acting Sergeant) (M.24211), 2 Canadian Provost Company
   The recommendation reads as follows:

On 13 April 1945 at approximately 0900 to 1000 at Map Reference 140750 Bielen, Province Drente, Holland, M.24212 Corporal (Acting Sergeant) Gouldie, S.W., 2 Canadian Provost Company, accompanied by Lieutenant R.W. Lawlor, an officer of 2 Canadian Provost Company, were on a reconnaissance to ascertain the required needs for the handling of their Provost duties, at the approaches to the bridge to be erected by 7 Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers, 2 Canadian Infantry Division. While on this reconnaissance they found that the infantry were seriously pinned down about 250 yards from the canal by concentrated enemy small arms fire and mortaring. Needless of this they pushed on with their task in spite of the fact that the intensity of enemy fire was ever increasing. Learning from two infantry stretcher bearers that the Reconnoitring Engineer Officer had been badly wounded while at the proposed bridge site, Map Reference 140750 over the canal, they pressed on fearlessly right to the edge of the canal, and thence to the house on the right of the road Map Reference 140750. Here they discovered the wounded Engineer Officer who had been laying there, after crawling to there from the proposed bridge site, for over three hours under heavy fire. The officer and Corporal (Acting Sergeant) Gouldie immediately gave first aid to the wounded Engineer Officer, who by this time was close to dying. This was done under heavy fire. The Provost officer remained with his brother officer, sheltering him at all times with his own body from the enemy fire. Corporal (Acting Sergeant) Gouldie made his way back to get his own Provost car 5-cwt, just in the rear of the infantry battalion. He procured it and again bravely made his way back in spite of the enemy's murderous fire along the road and at the house by the road and canal. He passed the first ambulance car 5-cwt, which had been knocked out of action, and made sure there were no wounded there. On arriving at the side of the house, they both placed the wounded officer in the Provost car 5-cwt, and Corporal (Acting Sergeant) Gouldie, S.W. drove from the house to the road and down to the nearest Regimental Aid Post. The intensity of the enemy fire was terrific which, by this time included shelling by German 88-mm artillery. The highly courageous action not only saved the life of the Engineer Officer, but also stimulated the morale of the hard pressed infantry so that when the time came for them to attack there was no question or hesitation.

Vliegerkruis
Flying Cross
Royal Decree no. 13 of 10 May, 1947
Wing Commander (J5056), Royal Canadian Air Force, Officer Commanding R.A.F. no. 143 Wing
   The recommendation reads as follows:

Wing Commander Grant was Wing Commander (Operations) at No.143 Wing from October 1944 to August 1945. Throughout the whole of this period of intensive operations, this officer showed the utmost gallantry and greatest determination in leading his Wing against the enemy. His personal courage and enthusiasm were of the highest order, and the determination with which he led his squadrons to attack heavily defended enemy strong points, communications and retreating German columns, often in the face of intense anti-aircraft fire, were beyond praise. During the period of the battle through Holland to the borders of Germany, No.143 Wing suffered very heavy casualties, but in spite of this, Wing Commander Grant's keenness and determination maintained the morale of the Wing at the finest pitch, and their outstanding achievements were due in great measure to this officer's personal qualities of leadership.
